Remotype turns your iPhone or Android phone into a real keyboard, trackpad, presenter remote and second screen for Mac, Windows and Linux. Keyboard & trackpad are free forever. Pair once with a code, everything is encrypted, and the computer app is open source.
I like this most as a travel utility. When I'm using a laptop somewhere else, I don't always want to carry a keyboard, mouse, and presentation remote. Having several of those functions available from my phone saves some space.
What needs improvement
The app could make the connection process even clearer for first-time users. I'd also like an easy way to save different computers and switch between them.
I looked at compact Bluetooth keyboards and travel mice. They're useful, but they still mean carrying additional hardware. Since my phone is already with me, Remotype is more convenient for occasional use.
I mainly use Remotype when working away from my desk. Turning my phone into a trackpad is surprisingly convenient, especially when I don't have my mouse with me. Setup was quick and I didn't have to create another account just to use the basic features.
What needs improvement
I'd like more trackpad gesture options and better control over pointer sensitivity. Multi-computer switching would also be handy.
A normal wireless mouse was the obvious alternative. I already carry my phone everywhere, though, so having the same functionality available without carrying another device is useful for me
The presenter functionality is what made me interested in Remotype. I don't particularly like carrying a separate presentation clicker, so having the controls on my phone makes more sense. The spotlight and laser features are a nice addition.
What needs improvement
I'd like more customization of the presenter interface. It would also be useful to have customizable buttons for things like starting a presentation or jumping between slides.
I previously used a basic wireless presentation remote. It did the job, but it was another small gadget to remember before a presentation. Remotype gives me the controls through something I already have with me.
