RECESS is built around a simple idea: use your apps for a set time, take a short break, then come back. While most app blockers fully lock you out. Recess just asks you to take a breather. Reply to a friend, post that story, have your 5 minutes of scrolling — then get back to your day. No hard blocks, no guilt — just gentle structure that helps you stay in control and stop doomscrolling. Recess helps you stay mindful without feeling punished.

As a medical student who is swamped with study, I kept finding myself get lost doomscrolling on social media (instagram, tiktok) in between my study breaks.
I wanted to be able to set myself a short limit of phone use, without locking me out for the whole day.
This helped me become more productive in my study, and now all my friends are using it too!
I'm sharing it in case you may also find it helpful for your phone addiction :)

does the break countdown pause if you actually open another app, or does it keep ticking in the background while you ignore it entirely?

@samet1061783 it keeps ticking in the background - keeps you off that particular app for whatever time you've set

the "take a breather" framing is such a smart shift from the usual hard-block approach. feels way more like a friend tapping your shoulder than a screen timeout.
