Quokka is an AI/ML-focused programming language built in India — designed as a Python alternative for modern machine learning. It features a self-hosting compiler, bootstrap verification, immutable-by-default variables, Result/Option error handling, and Python/ML interoperability. Quokka already works with real ML workflows, including QLoRA fine-tuning of 1B-parameter models. 🦘 Built for AI/ML. Built to self-host. Built in India.
Quokka started as a simple question: what would a programming language look like if AI and machine learning were considered first-class use cases from the beginning?
I started experimenting with the idea, and roughly 12 hours later, I had a working language.
Since then, Quokka has grown into a self-hosting, open-source programming language with ML tooling, Python interoperability, QLoRA support, and its own native ML layer, Joey.
It’s still early, and there’s a lot left to build. I’m launching Quokka here because I want to hear from developers, ML engineers, and programming-language enthusiasts who are willing to challenge the idea and tell me what should be better.
If you try it, I’d genuinely love to hear what you think.
