Not a budgeting app. The register itself: what you wrote, what cleared, and what's still out. Why build this in 2026? The phone version of that little paper booklet has mostly turned into budgeting software with a bank login attached — and handing over a bank login is a much bigger decision than "I'd like to keep track of my checks." Paper check registers are still sold in stores, and we think that's part of the reason. So we built the register, typed instead of written, and nothing else. What it does: • Two balances, always in view — your ledger balance, and your cleared balance. No mental math. • One tap clears an entry. Pending items stay visible until the bank catches up. • Check numbers increment automatically, and it warns you — without blocking you — on a duplicate. • Large numbers, high contrast, and full Dynamic Type support, so it stays readable at the largest text sizes. The part we spent the most time on is the part you shouldn't have to think about. Every save is atomic and checksummed, the app keeps redundant snapshots on the device, and there's a Backup & Recovery screen that shows you the state instead of hiding it: last save, generation number, last backup written to Files. One tap writes a complete .quillbook backup into the Files app — your copy, in your hands — and restoring shows you a preview before it replaces anything. CSV export is free and stays free; a backup shouldn't be the thing you have to pay for. To be concrete about the no-connection part: no account, no bank connection, no ads, no tracking, no analytics SDK. Quillbook never connects to the internet, and your records stay on your device unless you export them yourself. The free version gives you one account with every feature above. Quillbook Pro is a single $4.99 purchase — not a subscription — that lets you keep multiple accounts open at the same time. Quillbook is a personal record-keeping tool.
