Thanks @connor!
The idea originally came to me while standing in the restroom at Zachary's pizza in Berkeley (delicious, highly recommended). They had a map of Berkeley on the wall, and for whatever reason inspiration struck and I felt a compulsion make pretty maps.
@dayvli and I teamed up to knock the project out after walking away from our previous startup. I give him full credit for not just making one beautiful style (my original idea), but painstakingly crafting a dozen unique, modern aesthetics. He helped take the idea from a small fun experiment to a small-scale but really, really interesting art statement. I think his exuberance was the real spark that inspired us to try to build a brand around minimalist maps.
We actually render our maps from XML using Mapnik, so we don't actually have the tiles pre-rendered. Could be interesting to play with though. Might be something worth chatting about in a week or so (we have a *lot* queued up for now)
@_jacksmith We were the co-founders of what was einstein.com. It's a long story as to what happened, but at the end of the day Davy and I walked away to build other cool stuff. Was an incredible learning experience and I'm happy to have been able to walk away without too much of a mess on my hands!
@_jacksmith We were attempting to do product recommendation. Ie. help guide people towards buying the best consumers products for their budget and needs. Hard problem to effectively solve given the incredible diversity of consumer requirements.
@narekk Our underlying data is derived from Open Street Maps. We pre-generated all of the maps and stored in a CDN. Making it happen in realtime would have been pretty cool, but we chose not to go that route.

Love this! I've wanted to get a large map of Tahoe for my house up there, and I would love for people to be able to write in dry erase marker to show things they did there, and the next visitor see what they found interesting. I thought about just laminating it or framing it, and I want it big. Any suggestions?
@jennalanger What a fun idea! A glossy laminate would probably do the trick. If you'd like, we can make a really big, laminated poster of Tahoe for you. Just shoot me an email: sean@projectjefferson.com
Big fan of these, @_slinehan.
Why did you make them in the first place? Also, are there any tiles you can share with those of us who'd like to use these on Mapbox maps?
@_slinehan Love the concept, and love the maps. From one map-lover to another, I can't help wishing these styles (esp. Chocolate Lily) didn't add borders around the map area. It would be so much punchier, and seems conceptually appropriate (i.e. raw data printed) rather than something that's been translated from data into decor.
@jringenberg We've gotten that request once before as well. Our personal tastes were to label the maps, but we could definitely add an option to remove the frame and go full-bleed. If you are personally interested in buying one without the frame, we can make that happen immediately -- just shoot us an email. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm calling it a night for now... It's 2:20am in California (some of you know this intimately). Will be back on tomorrow to answer any questions / fix any broken things / chat exuberantly. Also, if anybody has questions they'd prefer to ask off PH, feel free to email me at sean [at] projectjefferson.com
