I learned about PrettyGoodPing from its developer Olaf Alders' blog, where he not only launched the service as a free beta but also walked through how to roll your own simple certificate expiry checker using the curl command, then the Go and Perl programming languages. Olaf is also known as the founder of MetaCPAN, the search engine for the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN), an ever-growing archive of code and documentation for Perl. So, it's no surprise that he made PrettyGoodPing using Perl, its Mojolicious real-time web framework, and the Minion high-performance job queue.
