Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I would like to introduce you to Pipilo, a unique Fediverse/Mastodon iOS app with a twist—you browse posts in a horizontally scrolling timeline. Pipilo is a hobby project that I’ve been working on in my free time. I recently launched version 1.2, which I believe now includes all the essential features you’d expect from a Fediverse app, and I’m thrilled to share it with you all now. So, what makes Pipilo different? Instead of the usual wall of posts, Pipilo presents you with a single post from your timeline (sometimes with replies from people you follow). You can swipe to see the next post, and the app always remembers your position. You can leave and come back right where you left off. It’s a fresh way to browse the Fediverse that might not be for everyone, but it offers a different experience that some may prefer over the traditional approach. Pricing model is similar to the one used in other applications in this category. You can use the app for free in a read-only mode, which includes reading all supported timelines, notifications, filters and search. A premium unlock is required to interact with posts, unlock push notifications and add multiple accounts. It is either a subscription or one-time purchase, whichever you prefer. I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback! You can follow the app on Mastodon here: https://indieapps.space/@pipilo

Congrats on the launch of Pipilo, @luckkerr! 🎉 The horizontal scrolling timeline is such a unique twist! I love how it focuses on one post at a time, making browsing so much more engaging. Excited to see how the community responds to this fresh take on the Fediverse! Keep up the great work!

This is an interesting concept, @luckkerr! I love the idea of a horizontally scrolling timeline for a Fediverse app like Pipilo. It seems like it could really enhance the user experience by reducing the overwhelming feeling that often comes with traditional vertical feeds. One thing I'm curious about is how you handle interactions in the app—will the replies from people I follow be displayed with the main post, or do I need to swipe specifically to see those? Also, how do you plan to promote the premium features? Do you think the freemium model will attract enough users to convert to the paid version? Overall, excited to see how this evolves!

@elke_qin Thanks, that’s a great question. When I’m fetching new posts I group all conversations together before displaying them. In this case you would see their replies directly under a post without need to scroll additionally. Additionally this all works based on your reading position. If you already saw the main post and then encounter a new reply from people you follow sometime later it will be visible again in a timeline. And the parent post will be displayed too so you can see the full context. I did not think about promoting premium features. Similar model is used by Ivory app, which when I used it convinced me to buy it. If someone uses the free version and available features are enough for them then I’m ok with that too.

This horizontal scrolling timeline idea sounds intriguing! I wonder how it impacts user engagement compared to traditional vertical feeds. Have you seen any KPIs or metrics that indicate whether users prefer this format? Also, as it's a hobby project, what kind of feedback have you received from early testers? Looking forward to seeing how Pipilo evolves!

@star_boat I don’t gather any statistics so I have no idea how it affects broader audience. How it works I can only tell based on feedback. Some really like this idea and share very positive comments. Some like to use it as an additional app for when they want to more slowly browse their feed. For others it just doesn’t work. Feedback I received was mostly positive, with few ideas that really improved the app. Occasionally there are people who dismiss it quickly because it’s not 100% free. That’s the only complaint that I received so far.

Finally , a timeline that doesn't make me feel like I’m drowning in posts! 😅
