I’m Greg, part of the Duet engineering team that created Periscope.
We built Periscope because we were frustrated with the "privacy paradox" of traditional VPNs. To get privacy, you usually have to trust a third-party server farm—servers that are often logged, hacked, or blocked by the very services you're trying to reach (like your home bank or Netflix).
The Periscope Difference:

One of the biggest challenges for us wasn’t encryption itself (WireGuard already gives us a strong foundation), but making connections reliable across real-world networks — hotel Wi-Fi, mobile carriers, CGNAT environments, and restrictive firewalls that often break direct peer-to-peer connectivity.
A lot of our work went into making those situations “just work” automatically. When a direct connection isn’t possible, Periscope can fall back to encrypted relay paths without exposing traffic to third-party VPN infrastructure. The goal was always to keep the privacy model Greg described intact while still making the experience seamless.
If you try Periscope during the launch, I’d especially love to hear how it behaves across different networks — that feedback helps us improve the connection logic quickly.
