the three stubborn principles are the real product here, not any single feature. a page has a bottom, written is written, an audience of one. every other journaling app eventually bolts on search or ai summaries because growth wants engagement, and pennen just refuses to. i asked ishaan about backup beyond icloud and got a real answer back, not a deflection, he actually said it's a genuine gap and it's changed his roadmap. that kind of maker honesty is rare and it's the thing that convinced me this is a real product, not a launch-day thing

the icloud only backup is the real gap right now, and it sounds like ishaan already knows it, some kind of periodic export you control yourself would close that. the other thing i'd want is just visibility into the fact that a rebuild only lives in your apple account, that's not obvious until someone asks about it in the comments

just using a plain paper notebook, which is honestly still the baseline this is competing against. also looked at day one but that app pushes you toward tagging and search pretty hard once you have more than a few weeks of entries, which is exactly the thing pennen deliberately avoids
