I built PaperSafeAI because I needed it myself.

My important documents were scattered across folders, downloads and scanned files. Saving them was easy. Finding the right one later—or remembering when something expired—was the frustrating part.

I wanted to search using what I remembered about a document, rather than guessing its filename. I also wanted useful details, like the owner, document number and expiry date, extracted automatically so I didn’t have to enter everything by hand.

But these are personal documents. I didn’t want uploading them to a cloud service to be a requirement for organizing them. That’s why PaperSafeAI’s desktop OCR and AI processing run locally, with documents stored in an encrypted vault.

It started as something to solve my own problem: less time hunting through files, fewer missed dates, and more control over where my information goes.

I’m sharing it because I suspect I’m not the only person who has a folder full of important documents and still struggles to find the one they need.

PaperSafeAI is a local-first, encrypted document vault for macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon Macs (M1 or newer).

It offers on-device OCR and AI metadata extraction, keyword and natural-language search, document organization, duplicate detection, expiry reminders, and local Wi-Fi sync with its mobile companion.

An internet connection is required initially to download approximately 1.13 GB of AI models. Desktop document processing runs locally afterward. Pro requires periodic online licence verification.

The free plan includes 25 processed pages. Standard Pro pricing is $4.99/month or $39/year, before applicable taxes.
