OtterTune

Hey, everyone. Jason from OtterTune here. OtterTune is based on database research out of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) to solve the problem of making database optimization more efficient and cost-effective. I’m posting this on behalf of our makers and co-founders, Andy Pavlo (@andypavlo), Dana Van Aken (@dvanaken) and Bohan Zhang (@bohanz); they’ll be available to respond to comments 🙂 Combining what we discovered in the academic world with doing proof of concepts for big brands (like booking.com where we outperformed their in-house DBA and reduced costs by 20%) and working with enterprise customers like Zscaler (where we increased their throughput 30% in the first week), we discovered what does and does not work in real-world scenarios. We found that many companies are understaffed, e.g., they don’t have a DBA and engineers are being asked to act as DBAs (in addition to their current responsibilities); they throw more money at cloud costs yet get diminishing returns on performance; and they often find tuning tasks like configuring knob settings and optimizing SQL queries to be labor-intensive work that often feels more like art than science. OtterTune specializes in optimizing PostgreSQL or MySQL on Amazon RDS and Aurora. We consistently get better performance on metrics like query latency, CPU utilization, read/write IOPs and throughput than default Amazon settings or tools like PGTune or MySQLTuner. This allows our customers to either increase performance by as much as 4x or get a smaller performance bump, but reduce their AWS costs, e.g., moving down on instance size while getting better performance. We use a combination of heuristics or best practices for databases, combined with our AI, to help make your databases better. OtterTune’s features are split into buckets: 💯 Health Scores: We monitor not only individual databases, but your entire fleet. We assign an overall score tied to best practices and AI-based optimizations for your databases, as well as individual scores for resources, tables, indexes and queries. OtterTune can automatically apply its recommended knob settings to databases on your behalf, with or without human approval, or give you the commands to make the changes. And since we know each business has peak and ideal times to make database updates and changes, we let you see as many tuning schedules as you want, down to the day, hour and minutes.
