Hi Product Hunt! I'm Iqbal, and I write Oil & Miles, a site about what car repairs really cost in the US.
I spend a lot of time around a repair shop, and the same thing keeps happening: someone buys a used car, or brings one in with a weird noise, and nobody has looked up what the federal records already say about it. The data is public, but it's spread over several government sites and written for engineers.
So the decoder puts it in one place. Paste the VIN and it checks the check digit first (a typo gets caught before anything is sent), then shows what the car is, the recalls for that model year, owner complaints by year, crash ratings, fuel economy and service bulletins, in plain English.
A few honest limits: recalls are listed for the model year, so the last step is always confirming your exact VIN with NHTSA or a dealer. And it doesn't replace a title or accident history report.
