Hi Product Hunt! 👋 I’m the solo developer behind Nas Player Pro.
The Inspiration & Problem:
I built this out of pure frustration. As a huge Datahoarder with a NAS full of videos and massive ZIP/RAR comic archives, I was incredibly jealous of iOS users. Android and Amazon Fire TV simply lacked a truly great, all-in-one media and comic streamer. I wanted an app that could read huge ZIP manga files directly via SMB with zero extraction time, but I couldn't find one. So, I decided to code it myself.
The Evolution & Technical Challenge:
My biggest hurdle was optimizing for the Amazon Fire TV Stick. It only has a pathetic 1GB of RAM. If you try to stream and render a 1GB high-res manga archive into memory, the app instantly crashes (OOM). My approach had to evolve: I engineered a system that aggressively uses the Fire TV's 8GB internal storage as a virtual memory pool, dynamically caching and dumping chunks over the network. It was a brutal battle of memory management, but it resulted in a buttery-smooth streaming engine on the cheapest hardware imaginable.
I also built a custom Double-Page Spread UI specifically for large TVs, while keeping the same app package seamlessly adaptive for touch-friendly mobile devices.
No Subscriptions:
I'm exhausted by the modern "freemium" and subscription ecosystem. That’s why Nas Player Pro is a simple, one-time purchase. Pay once, own your home server's ultimate living room hub forever.
I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or answer any technical questions you have about building for TV hardware! Cheers! 🍆
