Hi Product Hunt,
I am Kevin, one person in Helmond in the Netherlands. I build apps that stay on your own device.
Almost every children's app is paid for with your child's attention: adverts between levels, a streak that punishes a missed day, a shop full of coins that cost real money. I wanted to find out what is left if you take all of that out.
What is left is a hamster in a glass terrarium that your child looks after. He gets hungry, thirsty and sleepy. He grows from baby to wise old hamster, and he never dies. Six real breeds, each with its own character. Beside the cage sit fifty-six games: maths, words, thinking, shapes and space, memory, focus, planning, geography and board games. They run from age three to sixty-five and over, so a toddler, a ten year old and a grandparent can each play the same game at their own level. There is never a clock and never a mark.
No adverts. No account, no email address. No chat, no friend list, no other players. No internet needed, because nothing is sent anywhere. The hamster does talk to your child, and that happens entirely on the device in their hands. Coins are earned by playing and by walking, never bought. Buying sits behind a parent PIN.
Up to eight players on one device, each with their own hamster.
Free to download. One purchase opens the full version and that is the end of it. No subscription, no second purchase.
One honest note before you click: this is Android only today. The iPhone and iPad version is built but still waiting at Apple. If you are on iOS, the site has everything and I will come back here the day it lands.
Out now on Google Play, in seven languages.
Everything the app does and does not do is written out on the site, including who carries what: me for the app, the parent for supervision, playing time and the device.
Happy to answer anything, especially the hard questions about how a children's app without adverts is supposed to pay for itself.
