MurMass is a social network where you communicate by joining visible crowds gathered around topics. Approach a gathering that catches your interest, read the conversation, and join in. You can branch topics off in new directions, pin your favorites to return to later, or leave your own musings on the map. Being able to see where you are helps you take a broader view of things than you might on a text-only social network.

Astra made me think bigger about what I could actually finish in the time we had. Instead of stopping at a rough prototype, I felt I could push it to the point where people could really use it. If I had been working alone, I probably would have spent most of that time just getting the basic UI in place.

Hi, I’m Daichi, the creator of MurMass. Echo chambers are one of the problems associated with social media. In my own experience, too, a particular opinion can often seem disproportionately loud on a text-only social network. That made me wonder: if we could see how many people are actually gathering around a topic, might it be easier to step back from those echo chambers? Might it help each of us see things more fairly and make decisions that are truer to ourselves? That’s the idea that led me to create MurMass. In MurMass, crowds on a map are your entry points into conversations. Approach a gathering that interests you, read what people are posting, and sometimes join in yourself. If you want to take a conversation in a different direction, you can create a branch. You can also pin topics you’d like to revisit. Start by looking around the map and stepping into a conversation that catches your interest. It would really help me to hear about anything you found confusing or difficult to use. Please note that MurMass is currently in beta, and I cannot promise that your account information or anything you post will be carried forward into future versions. This is also a solo project, and I cannot say that I am fully prepared to maintain stable operations or handle rapid growth at a large scale. Please understand that I may need to limit registrations or access to features, and that features may stop working or I may be unable to keep the service available, without prior notice.
