Protocol Buffers has some features that makes it a nice serialization format: - You specify your data format using a language. Because of this, your data format and the documentation of your data format become one and the same thing. - Code generation for the language you're working in makes your read/write code easy and readable. A downside of Protocol Buffers compared to for example XML or JSON was that you couldn't easily view or edit the data, because it's a binary format. Well, that downside is gone. Editing Protocol Buffers data is now easy. Easier than editing XML or JSON data. You don't have to remember or look up what fields your class has, Mouse Melon just lists them all, and their documentation. This makes it the perfect tool for debugging any application that makes use of Protocol Buffers. There is a free version.
