Hey Product Hunt, I'm Irv Shapiro, the maker behind models.makewithtech.com. ⭐️ The Story Behind the Product ⭐️ My story is simple. About 4 years ago, I retired from the corporate world, where I built and sold multiple software-related businesses and started a YouTube channel for fun. To my surprise, it grew to over 5 million views. Then I started a community site (forum.makewithtech.com), so my views could help each other. That grew to thousands of members. While my videos all talk about how to use desktop technologies to create things, since my 3d printer videos did the best, I produced over 200 videos for that audience. Over and over again, I got the same two questions "where do I find interesting things to print" and "what happened to the Thingiverse customizer"? With over 70,000 subscribers, thousands of community members, and a background in software, I couldn't help myself. I wanted to create a site to help people customize 3d printer models. That site is models.makewithtech.com. ⭐️ The Problem ⭐️ Make it easy to find a 3d printer model you can customize for your specific needs. ⭐️ The Old Way ⭐️ Thingiverse had part of a solution. They provided an online customizer for OpenSCAD scripts. OpenSCAD is an open-source scripting (programming) language designed for creating 3d models. The OpenSCAD community added a panel on the side of their development tool where end users could enter values for variables used in a program. Thingiverse exposed this capability online. Unfortunately, the Thingiverse customizer was unreliable, and all development seemed to halt over the past few years. ⭐️ Our Solution ⭐️ A little more than a year ago, I began building an MVP for a web-based customizer. Initially, I used models from Thingiverse to prove I could make this work. Once that was done, over 1,000 people registered to try it out in just a few months. I realized that I needed to come out of retirement. ⭐️ How We Built the Product ⭐️ I supplemented my skills with a virtual team around the world.
