Hey everyone — I'm Lars, I built metastrip.app The origin story is simple: I needed to strip EXIF data from some photos before uploading them to a marketplace. Most tools I found were either abandoned, covered in ads, or wanted me to upload my files to their server — which kind of defeats the purpose when the whole point is privacy. So I built a clean, modern version that processes everything client-side. It worked. But it looked like every other SaaS landing page. The best metadata tools have always been CLI programs — ExifTool, mat2, ImageMagick — they all live in the terminal. So I thought: what if the web version lived in a terminal too? I scrapped the landing page and rebuilt the whole thing as a fake desktop with a working terminal. The stripping actually works — drag a file in, pick what metadata to remove, hit execute, download the clean file. But the experience feels like using a real CLI tool, complete with progress bars, ls output, and a bunch of easter eggs if you poke around. Everything runs in your browser. Zero files uploaded. Zero accounts. Zero tracking cookies (analytics is PostHog in cookieless mode — because a privacy tool with cookies would be embarrassing).
