Lovely idea! I would like to use tools like that to manage my lifestyle. However, I am not sure if the starting energy needed to use it isn't too big in the practical sense. I really love the idea, so please tell me that it's simple and I can really use it daily
@rue_ash What do you mean by starting energy? There's a short quiz to help you set your goals, but otherwise it's pretty lightweight. You enter in billing info and can start texting your meals right away. Please let me know if you're running into anything that's high friction.

@jrhizor it's a pretty well known concept, sad you didn't Google it XD
Still, I love your product :)

I'm from the Philippines and I can't seem to register my phone number. It would be really helpful if you have the country options beside the XXX-XXX-XXXX format. Thanks!
@sharmaine_marquez I'll add support for some chat apps in the future like WhatsApp or Telegram for International users.

This kind of app really worries me, since calorie counting is a dangerous kind of behavior that reenforces eating disorders… I can understand tracking meals to make sure you’re getting enough variety and all the nutrients you need. But I’m a firm believer that the risks of calorie counting far outweigh the possible benefits (if you’re actually eating excessively to an unhealthy amount, or eating too much oily sugary stuff and such, you probably know that you are, without needing to quantify it exactly). Well… I guess the app just isn’t for me. I’m just scared that incorporating AI into it to make calorie counting easier and quicker has the potential to amplify its harm further.
@sofiasmnk Your concerns are actually a part of why I built MealByMeal in the first place. In the past I was kind of obsessive about calorie tracking, when really I simply had "healthy days" and "absolutely unhealthy days". Obsessing about the specifics of the calories was a bit problematic and took a lot of time and mental energy.
I hope MealByMeal can be a calmer way of tracking calories. We also have warnings if people try to set unhealthy goals (and link to the eating disorder hotline), and we also encourage people to set goal ranges for weights to reflect that it's natural (and healthy) for your bodyweight to fluctuate over time instead of reaching some ideal specific number.
@jrhizor Fantastic concept, Jared! 🔥 MealByMeal's approach to simplifying food tracking and making it sustainable long-term is a game-changer. How did you strike the balance between simplicity and accuracy in the tracking process, and what kind of user feedback or challenges did you encounter during the development to ensure it's user-friendly for a wide range of individuals with different dietary needs?
@cata A lot of the balance actually comes in on the user side; you get a proportional amount of accuracy given the effort you put in. If you weigh all of your ingredients and report them by gram to MealByMeal you'll get great results, but if you use very ambiguous language it may be easier to do, but the result is a worse estimate.
For early beta users, the feedback was almost entirely focused on estimation quality, which is why I ended up adding a button in the web ui to flag bad estimates. These go into our testing framework after being manually vetted to improve estimations over time.
In order to ensure it worked well with a wide range of diets, I evaluated a bunch of different underlying food databases and search mechanisms to find ones that fit a wide range of food items. In the future, I may focus on things that help more specific dietary needs (like tracking gluten intake or other info).

Really appreciate the focus on ease and sustainability with meal tracking. Does the system learn from your eating habits over time to provide better estimates?
@petryan_kiree Eventually I'd like to auto-adjust based on your weight changes and calories tracked (maybe you habitually over or under report).
I do use feedback on the estimates (you can report bad estimates on the website) to improve the estimation model.
