Teacher-created, MathFactLab is a strategy-based math fact fluency program. Our students develop mastery of the basic math facts through focused practice, using multiple strategies and a variety of models at each level of the program.

MathFactLab started a dozen years ago as set of multiplication flashcards with visual strategies that I created for my students. Instead of just seeing a naked equation on one side and a product on the other, my flashcards gave students a means of solving the fact. The cards helped them see that they could double 3 sevens to solve 6 sevens, they could take one group away from ten groups to find nine groups, or they could combine 5 eights and 2 eights to build 7 eights. But a huge set of flashcards for each student proved to be unwieldy. When we went one-to-one with chromebooks at my school, I made a leveled math fact program using Google slideshows. This made a huge improvement; my students began making rapid progress. But Google slideshows couldn't track progress, nor could it give immediate feedback. That's when the idea of building an individualized, strategy-based math fact website was born. Zip forward four years, and I'm pleased to say that MathFactLab is now ready for the public. The students in my school tested it all last year. Results and feedback from both students and colleagues was very positive. If you have students or children who need help with their math facts, I encourage you to give MathFactLab a try. It costs nothing and will help them to grow as young mathematicians as they develop true, flexible math fact fluency.

The interface is not very good for 1-3rd graders. Using a tablet to enter numbers is clunky subject to simple entry errors. Parents have to step in and help the kids enter the numbers in order to meet the very short time constraints. Lastly, the philosophy of class and this app claims to minimize rote memorization, but this current implementation has only created extreme frustration for young kids having to do the exact same 1+2=3 over and over and over simply because they can’t enter it fast enough or without fat fingering the limited sensitivity tablet screen. Even adults helping enter the numbers after the kids tell us their answers results in the parents making simple entry errors causing the children to repeat the same skills they learned 3years earlier.
