I'm the solo dev behind Mate, and I built it out of frustration.
The problem: I got hit with forgotten subscription charges. When I looked for a simple expense tracker on Android, every app wanted my bank credentials, my email, cloud sync basically everything except to just work. The solution: An app that literally cannot access your data because it never leaves your device.
What Mate does:
- Track expenses & income with a clean keypad UI
- Auto-detect transactions from bank SMS and notifications
- Subscription tracking with auto-processing and swipe-to-pay
- Credit card management with EMI tracking
- Loan tracker with "Debt Watchdog" alerts you when you can pay off a loan
- Weekly/monthly budgets with a visual burn rate ring
- Home screen widgets (budget progress, quick-add, spending insights)
- What-If simulator ("If I save $500/month, when do I hit $10,000?")
- Biometric lock with configurable auto-lock - 48+ currencies, multiple wallets, Excel export
What Mate doesn't do:
- Collect your data
- Require an account
- Connect to your bank
- Show ads
- Cost money
Design: Monospace-driven UI with Geist Mono + NDot 57 typography. Three themes (dark, light, grey). Inspired by Dime for iOS, rebuilt from scratch for Android.
The trade-off: No cloud sync between devices.
