Matchaboy turns handheld gaming into hands-on discovery. Play Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, then pause and explore CPU instructions, memory, graphics and sound through a built-in Inspector. Free and open source, with two included indie games and direct host/join netplay. Built with Astra in Codex: an original Game Boy engine, mGBA-powered GBA support, and ten original game experiments available in the source.
How did Astra change the scope or ambition of what you built?

Astra expanded Matchaboy’s ambition from playing handheld games to helping people understand how they work. Through Codex, it helped develop and debug native audio, mGBA integration and the CPU, memory, video and audio Inspector, then run tests and prepare Windows, macOS and Linux releases. It also authored ten original game experiments—five GB and five GBA—with game logic, pixel art, levels, sound and build sources, and helped create the interactive website. Those experiments remain source test cartridges, separate from the two licensed games bundled with the app. The biggest change was being able to tackle low-level engineering and the user experience together, with working builds and verification records. I directed the scope, reviewed the results and pushed through revisions; mGBA remains the credited GBA engine.

Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I’m the maker of Matchaboy.
The idea is simple: play a moment, pause it, and understand what made it happen.
Matchaboy brings Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games to your desktop, with an Inspector for exploring CPU instructions, memory, graphics and audio. The current v0.1.0 release includes Tobu Tobu Girl and Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe by Tangram Games.
I built with Astra in Codex across the original Game Boy engine, Windows audio, Inspector improvements and ten original game experiments. GBA emulation is powered by mGBA, with third-party contributions credited separately.
The website includes an interactive console preview and recorded Inspector captures. Download the desktop app for live inspection. Windows, Apple Silicon macOS and Linux builds are available.
This is an early release, and compatibility feedback is especially useful. Full Game Boy Color support and AI gameplay are still unfinished.
