Generate endless Super Mario levels for free with GPT

MarioGPT is a finetuned GPT2 model that is able to generate Super Mario levels from a simple text prompt. This generation is not perfect, but is a great first step more controllable and diverse level / environment generation! 🍄

Love that we'll soon be mining our most nostalgic memories and recontextualizing them into novel experiences thanks to generative AI!

Next time is the time to perform the same work with Doom 😃

@chrismessina yes, but I checked the link and paper https://arxiv.org/pdf/1804.09154... There are nothing about text input in this paper like in MarioGPT, so I hope to see something for another games, so to be able in the evening start the game and say - "I would like to play patient game with more secret rooms and fewer cacodemons!" 😄

@asaskevich Hahaha! Great idea! 😄😄😄

Congratulations on the launch 🎉! Awesome idea! is there a way to specify length or complexity of the levels?
Shyam Sudhakaran
@alexey_yar Hey! One of the authors of the paper here. You can definitely specify length! I’ve tried generating huge levels and it works decently well. As for complexity, it’s not concretely defined. You can add many components (many pipes, many enemies, etc.).

Wow wow wow! Congratulations on the launch of MarioGPT on the Product Hunt! 🥳 I played Mario when I was a child. It brings back fond memories to me. I only have one question. What inspired you to create it? What was the idea behind doing this?
Ryan Hoover
Incredible. I know this is an obvious statement but: Gaming is going to get REALLY interesting in the next few years with the adoption of AI-powered tooling. At the very least, it will dramatically decrease the amount of people and time needed to build games, but I'm even more interested to see what new experiences creative people build with this tech.

@rrhoover 1000%... think of all the non-developers who can world build within existing franchises? You see this already on Mine Craft and Roblox... why not the rest of the gaming universe? Related: https://www.wired.com/story/robl... https://www.semafor.com/article/...

Congratulations on the launch, @chrismessina ,very interesting attempt . Fortunately, it was not released in my childhood, or I might not have gotten my degree. : )

This is what AI was made for. A new future, a bright one filled with the promise of endless Super Mario levels, has dawned upon us, and I'm here for it. Take my money.
