Hey Product Hunt 👋 Last month while planning a move I came across MyMaps by Google, which allows you to share and collaborate on custom maps with your friends. I was surprised to find out this meant asynchronous collaboration instead of real-time (which I'm so used to with tools like Figma 😋), so that gave me the idea to build such a tool myself. Here are some of its features: 🙌 Real-time collaboration to help plan trips synchronously ✏️ Draw to highlight areas on the map 📏 Create lines to designate paths and measure distance 📐 Create areas to mark different zones 📍 Create markers to save places on the map ☕️ Find places and things to do nearby 🔍 Search and navigate to specific places 👀 Observe other users by clicking on their avatar 📝 View a list of all the annotations, and toggle their visibility 💾 Export the map data as GeoJSON ...and much more - all for free! While I am using Firebase which has a generous free plan, I felt it would be too risky to provide a live version as real-time collaboration can be costly. Instead I've provided simple instructions in the GitHub repo so anyone can self-host it (or even commercialize it if they want!). Hope you like it! 💜

@alyssaxuu Hi Alyssa. I am Marleybongwe I really love what you have done with this platform. For the fact that it is a doppelgänger of my App“Pagiis”. The app(Pagiis) uses real-time location to allow users to connect and share useful information from any location at anytime. I will say this out loud. I would love to see if these two ideas were to be Intergrated what would be end product. I see a great potential here. I see the future of networking. This looks incredible and interesting (as your projects always do!!!). Could it do routes? Something like this hooked into OpenGSM and other map projects would be SO neat for route planning tours and foot/bike trips, similar to (ridewithGPS Premium, Strava Routes, Kamoot)

@milkywilky Yep! I explained in the GitHub README that there's a Leaflet plugin that could be used here, the Leaflet Routing Machine, allowing you to get a route between 2 points. It's doable, the issue I had was that it required some sort of backend (so no free API or anything I could use). So if anyone wants to contribute to the tool they could definitely add this feature ^^

This is pretty cool! the geojson export is something I am looking forward to. A couple of questions, 1. Is there a way we can programmatically display an information layer on top? 2. Can we access the annotation via APIs?

Hi Alyssa! Congrats on the launch! This is an amazing product 🚀 I'm also concerned that there isn't a collaborative tool for working with maps for travelers like Figma for designers. My team and I make a service for creating routes for traveling, hiking, cycling, and other outdoor activities. It's called ActiveTrip.me. And we plan to add the ability to collaborate in real-time.
