Mai is your personal avatar’s social network, where you can fully express yourself with an avatar that is more personal than emoji & more alive than bitmoji. Fully customize your avatar’s voice, style & movement, with over 120 animations & poses or insert audio from your voice or popular clips, which is then lip-synced in real-time.

Lots of fun to be had with this app and delighted to have discovered it today. A few questions:
- are you planning to bring our a version where there is a transparent background as this could be overlaid on another video?
- is there a way to download to the camera roll? I worked around this by emailing the video to myself
- can we post privately rather than to our feed if we only want certain people to see the content we create?
- can we delete the videos we create?
- I seem to have a problem creating a GIF - each time when looking to create one for example having posted the video and then looking to share as a gif the app crashed - is this a known issue?
- are you planning bring out a pro version without a watermark?
Looking forward to hearing what you have in store moving forward - in the meantime I've added you to my curations and created a video to share about your new app!
hi @krishnade , so glad to hear you like the app and found it fun to use! Thanks for the great questions, I've answered them in order below.
are you planning to bring our a version where there is a transparent background as this could be overlaid on another video?
***yes, we are planning for that, great suggestion! We are also prepared for full ARKit integration. In this version if you hold down the camera button you can record up to 10 seconds of video as your background and then add an animation, pose and audio to your avatar.
is there a way to download to the camera roll? I worked around this by emailing the video to myself
***make sure to check your moments and albums view in Photos, each post you create should automatically save to your camera roll. If not please let me know :)
can we post privately rather than to our feed if we only want certain people to see the content we create?
***yes, we have full 1-1 and group chat integration. You can create a video with your avatar from within a chat, or by hitting the plus button at the bottom of the screen. Once you are done creating you have two options, “post to feed” or “post to chat”, the latter sending the message to someone privately. Check out my post on mai a few minutes ago for a visual of this.
can we delete the videos we create?
***yes, you can delete a video or post at any time from your profile. simply go to the post and click on the 3 dots on the right side of the screen. Check out my post on mai a few minutes ago for a visual of this.
I seem to have a problem creating a GIF - each time when looking to create one for example having posted the video and then looking to share as a gif the app crashed - is this a known issue?
***are you having an issue sharing a GIF of the video you created onto another platform or adding your avatar to a GIF as the background of your post?
are you planning bring out a pro version without a watermark?
***we have quite a few high profile brands, influencers and ambassadors ready to come onto the platform and yes, we are thinking a lot about a “pro” or “white label” version of the technology. For example, to control the experience we want in the app we created an end to end animation suite of our own, and you can imagine people wanting to use that to create bespoke, avatar-driven content :)
Hope these answers are helpful, please keep the questions coming!

@matthewprovo Thanks for answering my questions.
Yes I had seen the option to record video and add an animation to it.
I don't seem to have any downloads in my camera roll - hence me having to email and then download it to the camera roll from there. I have checked my phone settings and photos, mic and camera access are enabled.
I don't have a network on the app yet so having a chat is not relevant - I had seen the two options - I am more interested in being able to take the content I create and sharing it and integrating t into other content - so it would be great to have the option to just post privately on my profile so that then I can share from there or download from there.
Thanks for confirming how to delete content.
Yes what I was trying to do is click the share button from a piece of content created from my profile and then share as a gif - each time the app crashed (I have not tried adding an avatar to a gif yet)
I teach and mentor marketing, news/media, PR and comms professionals about social business, mobile marketing and live streaming and can immediately see an application for your app - I'll be sharing it with people in my next programme this weekend - and they would want white label content - I also personally usually upgrade apps to have it unbranded for my own small business - so I will be interested to learn how you roll these features out.

@matthewprovo I have just been doing some more testing:
- when looking to share as a gif after a video has been created and sharing to email nothing attaches then the app crashes
- I discovered the voice changing tools - but when I click to try one the app crashes
- I checked again and there was no content saved automatically to the camera roll
Thanks so much for hunting us @chrismessina and hello Product Hunt community, we are very excited to be here! We will be here all day to answer your questions and hear your thoughts, very much looking forward to your feedback.
@aliamarsy and I are very proud of our team, which includes includes two of the leading illustrators from the show Archer & Ellen’s emoji exploji, software engineers with multiple exits or extensive startup experience, and a number of PhDs or Master’s grads in applied math and data science from Harvard, Oxford and NYU. While mai Social is made to be light-hearted and fun, its mission has broader implications for design and culture.
The team aims to help define the intersection of art, science and digital innovation while addressing the underrepresentation of certain identities in character design and digital identity creation. Behind all of this is a long-term interest in what data science and deep learning has to offer for the social world. We posted about our journey thus far on Medium https://medium.com/@itsyourmai/g... if anyone is interested.
@aliamarsy@itsyourmai@matthewprovo Can you say more about this? "Behind all of this is a long-term interest in what data science and deep learning has to offer for the social world."
What real-world applications are you pursuing?
Thanks for your question and continued support @chrismessina
When @aliamarsy and I started the company two years ago, we studied the proliferation of voice driven-products but continually wondered what those “AI’s” would look like. We spent well over a year testing a lot of these theories in an R&D capacity…check out the demo below of President Obama’s AI that we built in 6 days.
https://youtu.be/LirTvE2jR2Y
This left us with one big question — what would it take to reduce a 6-day creation process to 60 seconds, and how could we then give those tools to everyone to represent themselves accurately…on their mobile device?
That led us to build mai Social as a way to begin to close the gap between these two worlds in what we hope is a really fun way. At the same time it can help prepare all of us for a digital future where interacting with autonomous avatars at work, in a retail store, in the classroom and at my Airbnb is expected.
We want to change interaction.
We would like to play a role in giving anyone the ability to interact with digital characters who represent brands, ideas and areas of expertise. We believe that mai Social has the chance to unlock access to the knowledge of those who came before and to preserve the learnings of today at scale. Today’s release marks step one in this process, and much of the deep learning driven work we have done along the way will be available to those on the mai Social network soon!
Thanks for the feedback @lekanb , we see some similarities too. So, what makes us different?
Most “avatar apps” to date could be considered a utility, and we wanted to push these boundaries with a fully functioning social network, powered by digital personas. We are ready for ARKit integration and have a lot of fun data-science driven features on the road map across the next few months.
We see a lot of long-term value in giving people the ability to share the content they create on existing networks, but there will be a bunch of content-driven features that may only be available inside of the mai Social network.

I've known the team for a few years now. Super happy to see them release their first consumer app! Let's get this party started!
if you think you can predict what the next big consumer app is, you're a genius or delusional. these guys have taken a stab and I'm excited to see how it picks up!
Thanks a lot for the support @ozak , here's to hoping for the first of your two options 😉👊🏻🚀

cool new social app! bold move to make a network of their own over being a utility that solely lives within imessage or gboard. the app does allow you to export to all the major players
Thanks a lot for the support @stepan_veselovskyi ! We feel the value created by creating our own network far surpasses that of a "utility" as you put it and there will definitely be in-app features exclusive to the mai Social network so we are preparing for that.
