Machine Windows

Imaginative tools to visualise the logic of machine learning

Two interfaces—machine windows onto the latent space—that let users visually conceptualise the richness of computer decision-making processes. By moving away from image generation that resembles our own world (e.g. Dall-E), we surface the machine’s reality.

We’ve just launched the two interfaces as part of ‘Machine Windows: Views from the Latent Space’, a new research project from the tech-driven design agency Bakken & Bæck. As machine learning fuels new opportunities for visual production, we brought two of our core disciplines—machine learning and visual design—closer together to ask: how can we see more, not less, of the visual material neural networks can generate, and the logics that produce them? The interfaces combine the imaginative with the informative and provide an interactive space for users to roam around in.
