FREE! Every MacBook with Apple Silicon has a secret — a military-grade accelerometer buried inside the chassis, doing absolutely nothing. Until now. MacBon turns your MacBook's body into a touch-sensitive controller. Tap the side of your laptop once — boom, muted. Tap twice — screen locked before you even stand up. Three taps — your custom sound, a motivational quote, or literally anything you want.
I accidentally discovered something crazy — every Apple Silicon MacBook has a Bosch BMI286 accelerometer inside that Apple basically never uses.
So I thought: what if I could just... tap my laptop to do things?
Turns out, you can. And it feels absolutely magical.
The first time I tapped my MacBook's chassis and it muted itself, I literally laughed out loud. It felt like I'd unlocked a cheat code that was hiding in plain sight.
MacBon reads the accelerometer at 800Hz (yes, 800 times per second), uses smart filtering to ignore keyboard typing and normal desk vibration, and executes your chosen action in under 50 milliseconds.
Some things I personally love doing with it:
Single tap to mute when someone walks into the room
Double tap to lock screen as I walk away from my desk
Triple tap to play a duck quack sound (don't judge me)
It's 100% free, 100% open source, and runs entirely offline — no accounts, no telemetry, no cloud. Your taps stay between you and your Mac.
The entire app is under 2MB. It lives in your menu bar and does absolutely nothing until you tap.
Would love to hear what creative tap actions you come up with! 🤙
