LockMic is a free, open-source menu bar app for Mac. Press Cmd+Shift+M and your mic is muted for the whole system, so Zoom, Teams, Meet and every browser hear nothing. A small HUD shows if you're muted. Press Cmd+Shift+R to record your mic and the call audio into one file on your Mac. No bot joins the call and recordings are never uploaded. It's tiny: about 0.1% CPU when idle. Works on macOS 14+.

Hey everyone, I'm Oleg, the maker of LockMic.
I'm on calls all day: Zoom, Teams, Meet, sometimes all three in one day. Every app has its own mute button in a different place, and more than once I thought I was muted and I wasn't. So I built a small menu bar app that mutes the mic for the whole Mac.
Press Cmd+Shift+M and every app gets a muted mic, because it mutes at the system level, not inside one app. A small HUD on screen shows if you're muted or not. You can also turn on push-to-talk or push-to-mute.
The other thing I use a lot: Cmd+Shift+R starts recording. It saves your mic and the call audio into one file on your Mac. No bot joins the call and nothing gets uploaded. After the meeting I just drop the file into ChatGPT or Claude and get the transcript and a summary.
It's free and open source (MIT) and needs macOS 14 or newer.
I'd really like to hear what you think. What's missing, what's annoying, what would make you use it every day? I'll be here all day answering.
