Hi Product Hunt 👋 I'm Dylan, the maker of LingTube. I've found that learning a language through videos I actually enjoy works better than anything else I've tried. It never feels like a chore, and what you pick up is the language people really use every day. Compared with textbooks and traditional language apps, it takes less effort and I learn more. The problem was the workflow. I kept pausing videos to type words into Google Translate and paste sentences into DeepSeek for grammar explanations. Google Translate handles full sentences well, but with single words it often picks the wrong meaning when a word has several senses, because it ignores the context and the part of speech. And the words I looked up that way, I forgot almost right away. So I built LingTube to fix that. Along the way I ran into more problems: some YouTube videos have no captions, or captions that are wrong. There was no way to take notes at a specific timestamp, or to discuss a moment with other learners. Netflix had no bullet comments (danmaku) to interact while watching. And general AI chatbots couldn't answer my questions about a video, because they didn't know what was in it. LingTube now solves each of these. Here's what it does: 🔤 Context-aware word & phrase translation Tap a word or select a phrase, and LingTube sends the current subtitle line along with it. The translation is picked for how the word is used in that sentence, using its part of speech and base form, instead of listing every dictionary meaning. 🎨 Automatic part-of-speech tagging, furigana and pinyin Every subtitle is analyzed with language-specific NLP. Words are color-coded by part of speech, Japanese kanji get furigana, and Chinese gets tone-marked pinyin. 📊 Grammar breakdowns and CEFR levels Ask for a grammar analysis of any sentence. Words you save are tagged with an estimated CEFR level (A1–C2), so you can see where your vocabulary actually sits. 🔁 Review what you saved Saved words and sentences go into review cards that link back to the original video moment, and you can export them to Anki. 🎙️ Transcription for videos without captions No subtitles, or bad ones? LingTube transcribes the audio with Whisper and translates it into your native language. 📝 Timestamped notes you can share Write Markdown notes pinned to a moment in the video. Public notes show up as avatars on the progress bar for other learners watching the same video. 💬 Danmaku on YouTube and Netflix Comments scroll across the video at the moment they were posted, so you can see what other learners reacted to. 🤖 AI Q&A that knows the video Ask questions about what's being said. Answers are based on the video's subtitles and include clickable timestamps. ▶️ Keeps the YouTube features you rely on Chapters, thumbnail previews, the "most replayed" heatmap and YouTube Shorts (in a portrait layout) all keep working in study mode.
