Like many of you, I'm really bad at keeping journals. I've always liked the idea of a journal, and I do enjoy writing, and I've owned several journals in my life -- but the habit has just never stuck. As a result, large swaths of my life have gone unrecorded, leaving me with a ever-nagging sense that, wouldn't it be so epic if I bought another journal and started writing everything down!? But then I remind myself of my disastrous journal-keeping track record, and snap back to reality. Sadly, after a while I just gave up on the idea of keeping a journal entirely. But at some point around 7 years ago -- after just learning that I was being laid off from my job -- I did something different. I opened up a new Google Spreadsheet and wrote a few words from what was foremost on my mind: 'Laid off today'. I then set the background color to a deep red, to represent the stress I was feeling, and I closed the sheet and forgot about it. About a week later, something else happened. I opened up the same Google Sheet and wrote in it again. Pretty much every time something significant in my life happened, I'd open up that Google Sheet and write a line or two about it. This became a habit that would continue for years, and finally I realized something that floored me: I'm journalling!? I'd somehow stumbled into a journalling habit that stuck. So far, it's been 7 years and counting, and I'm still journaling. That, to me, is amazing. Eventually, I found myself wanting to do different things that weren't possible with Google Sheets. Things like the ability to create a set of reusable background colors, or send myself reminders if I hadn't journaled in a while. I knew I'd found something special, but I wanted to add features and make it even better, and share it with family and friends so they could use it too. So I opened up PhpStorm and began to write code... Some months later LifeSheet was born. LifeSheet is like a spreadsheet for important things that happen in your life. It's a journaling workflow that lets you write a little, and be done with it in seconds. It's the journal for people who have trouble keeping journals. It still needs a lot of work, but please give it a try and let me know what you think.
