Hi Product Hunt,
I'm excited to introduce KhataOS, a free, open-source accounting software built for businesses and accountants who want full control over their books.
Why I built it
Millions of small businesses and accountants, especially in India, still rely on Windows-only desktop accounting software, pay recurring subscription fees, and exchange accounting data using pen drives.
I wanted to build something different: accounting software that is free, works across platforms, keeps your data in files you own, and preserves the familiar keyboard-driven workflows experienced accountants already know.
What KhataOS offers today:
Core Accounting: Double entry bookkeeping, vouchers, bill-wise tracking, inventory with godowns and batches, bank reconciliation, and PDF invoices.
Familiar Experience: Tally-style keyboard shortcuts and support for importing Tally XML exports.
India Compliance: GST invoicing, GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9, GSTR-2B reconciliation, e-invoice JSON, and TDS.
Global Tax Support: UAE and Saudi VAT, Arabic RTL support, ZATCA Phase 2 e-invoicing, UK MTD VAT, and Singapore GST F5.
Data Ownership & Security: Local backups, a tamper-resistant audit trail that cannot be disabled, and secure sharing with accountants through office networks, encrypted relay, or sealed files.
What's new this week?
We've added faster date and period entry, report navigation using + and - keys, and month-by-month ledger views to make everyday accounting more efficient.
What isn't ready yet?
KhataOS is still in early alpha. Installers are not yet digitally signed, and features such as payroll and order management are still on the roadmap.
For now, I recommend trying it with a test company rather than using it for live accounting.
How you can help
I'd love for you to give KhataOS a try, enter a few vouchers, explore the workflows, and share what feels right or needs improvement.
Feedback from accountants and experienced Tally users would be especially valuable.
KhataOS is built with Rust and Tauri, licensed under AGPL, and open to community contributions.
My goal is simple: make professional accounting software accessible to everyone, without subscriptions, platform restrictions, or vendor lock-in.
Looking forward to your feedback!
