Hi Product Hunt. We supply IoT SIM cards, and the question we hear most from fleet and device teams is "how much data will this actually use?". Vendor estimates usually ignore what drives real usage: protocol overhead, reconnecting for every message, TLS handshakes, retries and firmware updates.
So we built a small calculator that makes every assumption visible and editable:
- presets for a GPS tracker, a smart meter and a POS terminal as starting points;
- per-device and fleet totals per month, with a breakdown by reports, heartbeats, events, commands, connection setup and OTA;
- the formula is on the page, and a standalone version is MIT-licensed on GitHub.
It is an estimate, not a measurement: run a pilot and compare. Feedback on missing inputs (for example DNS or time sync) is very welcome.
