About two-three months ago, I was at a grocery store trying to stock up supplies before the world went to lockdown mode. I thought I'd get some vegetables, and I was trying to calculate the price in my head. I could do simple calculations (like 4+1), but when it came to larger numbers (like 14+17, for example), it look me an uncomfortably large time to calculate it in my head. This made me feel bad about myself. Sure, I could use my phone's calculator to do the task, but the numbers aren't that high, so I should've been able to calculate it in my head by the time I pick my phone up from my pocket, open the calculator app, and punch the numbers in. I used to do a lot of mental calculations during school, so I realised that my calculation speed has significantly deteriorated since I don't really practice mental math. After talking to a couple of people, I realised that a significant number of them also felt the same way. That's when I decided to build this app - to help me practice mental math, and hopefully help other people as well. The concept is pretty simple, and it gamifies math with the help of global leaderboards and achievements. I had a 0.1 version ready about three weeks ago, and I got quite a bit of interest from "TestFlight" groups in Reddit. I had about 115 beta testers, who helped me fine tune the app. About two weeks ago, I launched version 1.0 to the App Store. The only marketing I did were some Reddit posts I made to a few iosgaming and programming subreddits (where the posts got popular). At the time of writing this post, I have about 1100 downloads, and about 100-200 daily active players! In a span of two weeks, IntelliMath received 89 ratings in the App Store, and 22 reviews from all over the world which gave the app an average rating of 4.9/5.0! The app is fine tuned to work well on all iOS devices (native iPad support is coming soon, it currently scales the app up on iPads). The app also supports Dark Mode. There are no intrusive ads - as most ads are just banner ads taking up space which is otherwise unused. Even the ads I have in the game are family friendly ads based on recommendation by an early beta tester who happened to be a school teacher who wanted to suggest this game to their students. For people who really don't like to see ads, I have included a small one time purchase to remove ads and add other aesthetic improvements. I've also pledged to not make this a pay-to-win game, so a paying user will not gain any gameplay advantages over a non-paying user. This is a pet project of mine that I work on weekends to improve my iOS/Swift skills, and I am happy to see how well it turned out so far! The app is written in Swift 5 using UIKit, and I've also mostly implemented my own custom UI instead of using dependencies - this made the app just about 8 MB, which was another point a lot of my users appreciated!
