Hey Product Hunt! Maker here.
Inspired by HackerBooks and HackerTube, I wanted to find the feature films and standalone documentaries that Hacker News commenters genuinely recommend — without technical collisions or meme noise taking over the rankings.
When you scan 49.3 million HN items (2006–present), naive string matching breaks in funny ways: Solaris (1972) matches SunOS/ZFS threads, Threads (1984) matches POSIX pthreads, Serenity (2005) matches SerenityOS, Primer (2004) matches programming tutorials, and Idiocracy or Office Space top the chart purely from one-line jokes.
HNMovies resolves citations 1:1 against IMDb (>= 250 votes, strictly movies and standalone documentaries), penalizes meme metaphors, and weights distinct recommending commenters + 20-year survival.
My favorite part is dragging the Obscurity slider (< 60k IMDb votes) — it immediately surfaces high-conviction cult classics and tech documentaries like General Magic, Colossus: The Forbin Project, Pirates of Silicon Valley, Get Lamp, and Tim's Vermeer, each with verbatim HN quotes linked back to the original threads.
Both the site and the open Parquet/JSONL dataset on Hugging Face (gnumanth/hnmovies) update automatically every week. Would love to hear what hidden gems it surfaces for you!
