HappyConvert is a free online media toolkit for converting, cutting, compressing, extracting audio, making GIFs, and cropping videos directly in your browser. No login, no watermark, and no forced cloud upload.
How are the actual file size limits on the free tier, especially for video? I'd love to know if there's any catch before I start using it for longer client projects.

There is no artificial free-tier file size cap right now, since the processing runs in the browser rather than through a paid server queue.
The practical limit depends on your device, browser memory, video length, codec, and the operation. For quick trims, audio extraction, and small/medium conversions it works well. For longer client projects or very large videos, especially full re-encoding like MP4 to WebM, it can take a while and may hit browser memory limits.
So the “catch” is not a paywall, but browser-side performance. I’m trying to be transparent about that in the product instead of pretending it replaces a desktop editor for heavy files.
how does it handle larger files though, like is everything processed locally in the browser or is there some server step i should know about?

HappyConvert is designed to process files locally in the browser whenever possible. There is no forced upload-to-server step for the main tools, which is why there is no cloud queue, login requirement, or watermark.
For larger files, the tradeoff is that performance depends heavily on the user’s device, browser memory, codec, and what operation is being done. Simple cuts or audio extraction are usually much lighter than a full video re-encode.
the in-browser conversion actually feels snappy, and skipping the watermark plus cloud upload is a nice touch. cropping a quick clip without an account was exactly what i needed.

That was exactly the use case I had in mind: quick media fixes without creating an account, uploading private files, or getting a watermark at the end.
