Derek Chng
Hey guys, Derek here from Singapore. Recently created and soft-launched my start-up, a unique travel review website called Guidemaster, in May and I stumbled upon Product Hunt a month ago after my co-founder Zav directed me here. Now with my website up and running (while constantly being improved), I thought I’d share it here and reach out to more people (or get feedback). To start off, many people will agree that all travel review websites out there are similar: cookie-cutter versions of a 1-5 star location rating stuffed with tons of lengthy reviews which were tedious to sift through. Worse still, important info or facts were often omitted or not clearly stated, like say the extremely long and uncomfortable journey to an island resort, among countless examples. Being an avid traveller and scuba diver, I encountered many frustrating incidents because of this lack of information or knowledge; causing me to have an unfulfilling trip or travel experience. Current travel review sites are decent but there’s a nagging feeling that something was missing: numerous, small things that collectively made a huge difference. I thus conceived the idea of a next-gen travel review website which would be the solution to all your travel issues, and thus – Guidemaster was born, a dream 4 years in the making. Guidemaster differs from your traditional travel review sites in not one, not two, but up to seven ways: 1. Structured Info & Reviews by Country, Region/State*, City, and everything else below 2. Icons, short definitions & coloured bar meters (with % scores) have replaced the traditional wordy reviews to make reading reviews fast, easy and precise 3. A simple click rating system makes reviewing a location fast, fun and easy 4. Expandable criteria options to view (and rate) more in depth sub-criteria depending on your preference 5. Wide range of categories (some to be implemented in the near future) to help you discover new travel places & ideas: examples include entertainment venues (i.e. Broadway, casinos), nightspots (i.e. clubbing spots, night markets), nearby day trip opportunities, events, activities & tours (e.g. festivals, cruises, liveaboards, hot air ballooning, aurora chasing), plus much more! 6. Present & future search/navigation tools to allow fast searches of specific places-of-interests, such as the future ability to find all dive sites in a country; or all fine dining restaurants in a specific city. 7. Future expansion into reviews of transportation companies (i.e. Airlines, taxi companies) and other exciting, cool prospects (reviewing conference rooms/exhibition halls for corporate events) Check it out and if you like what my team and I are doing, please sign up and contribute to our community. We will be constantly adding in new and exciting features so stay tuned! Major add-ons will include multiple photo & short video uploads, and a user profile page. Ultimately, I hope my website will save travellers time, money or provide people with a better travel experience – My own small way of contributing to society. Also, reviews of countries, cities, and municipalities can assist governments to focus their efforts to improve certain areas they are lacking (e.g. perceived lack of security in the city) and also help businesses focus on their areas of weakness which require improvement (e.g. poor service, long queues). Plus since the upkeep for the website itself is negligible (for now anyway), I would keep it running indefinitely. We are keen to expand our team of volunteer moderators (with future potential to be paid staff) as we grow. If you have any questions, feedback or enquiries, please contact me or my team at admin@theguidemaster.com. Thank you! * Reviews are not available for Region pages (and certain areas) to prevent overlap of reviews with related pages
