What do you think? …

Jon Lax
How is this not called GitPaid?
Jim Carter III
@jlax GitMoney?
Erik Torenberg
@jlax @noinput that's good
Matthew Mueller
@jlax Oh man we should have asked you first!
Joe Farish
@mattmueller Surely not too late to rename it?
Blaine Hatab
I like their intention but their featured posts don't line up with what their goal is. "Write HTML and CSS for Financial site" isn't the open source I'm going for even if their code is open source.
Matthew Mueller
@blainehatab Great feedback. We thought about this a bit. While the tasks you complete aren't open source, you're working with open source technologies. Also, the repository authors will get paid based on their contributions, so they are definitely getting paid to work on open source.
Blaine Hatab
@mattmueller I'm still not seeing how this is different from the other freelance sites. I'm assuming you don't mean that I have to only use open source technologies because some of those posts will require non open source work. So do the original authors of the open source repositories I use get paid in some way? Like I choose Leaflet over Google Maps for the project, does Leaflet get some sort of benefit? I most likely won't feel a need to contribute to the open source libraries that I would use for those projects. And if I'm working on some random project with open source libraries, that is no different than every project I do. Sorry for being critical :).
Matthew Mueller
@blainehatab Haha no worries! I think this might clear things up a bit. There's 3 groups of people in our marketplace: - Task Visionary: Company or individuals that need to get something done post a task. - Task Hero: Individual completing the task for the Task Visionary. - Task Angels: Open source authors and contributors who created a library that the task will depend on (in our case jQuery). The Task Visionary may post a task that is specific to their company. This task will be public for viewing, but any bids by Task Heroes to complete the task are private. The Task Visionary picks a Task Hero from the bids and then work begins. Any code written would may be private and closed-source (ex. custom jQuery calendar plugin for Company XYZ). Once the task is complete, the Task Hero gets 80% of the task price, 10% goes to the Task Angels (jQuery contributors) based on how much they contributed to the project, and 10% goes to Gittask. You can check out how that 10% gets distributed to the Task Angels here: https://gittask.com/pricing Hopefully this clears things up. Let me know if you have any other questions or comments!
Blaine Hatab
@mattmueller Fantastic, thank you for clearing this up. This is a perfect explanation. That would be awesome if you could get a page on your site explaining that in a simple way. I didn't figure that out from the website. The 10% to the open source library is very cool.
Matthew Mueller
@blainehatab Sweet! You're definitely not alone, haha. We'll need to rework some pieces of our home page to try and clear things up. Maybe also add an FAQ as well. We're also planning a couple blog posts to explain the philosophy and how we built Gittask. Stay tuned!
J Herskowitz
It would be cool to directly integrate crowdfunding (from users) for the tasks/features.
Augustin Riedinger
@jherskowitz Definitely. This platform does that already : http://funding.openinitiative.com but it hasn't acquired enough popularity!
Arjun Sarode
I like the feel of this a lot more than other freelance-directed sites like Odesk. The search function could use some improvement though. I want to be able to search for keywords like "PSD" or "responsive", not just search for repos.
Matthew Mueller
@rjun07a Agreed!
Marc Mezzacca
Really interesting, may give it a try... any .NET devs on the platform?
Matthew Mueller
@mmezzacca Sweet! Right now we don't have a breakdown on what developers are specialized in. We're actively recruiting developers from GitHub and mailing lists so if you post a task, I'm confident we'll find you someone great :-)
Eric Willis
Seems like a cool concept. Make money by working on open source tasks.
Matthew Mueller
@erictwillis Thanks Eric!
Ronen Teva
Looks very interesting!
