Howdy PH! Eleven years ago in high school a friend of mine asked me to help her with a video project. Since she's a girl and I was socially awkward, I uploaded a how-to video to YouTube so I wouldn't have to help her in person. Ironically, that became the most popular video I had uploaded at the time, so I kept at it. I ultimately created over 100 videos with over 23M views combined, and media coverage from the likes of NPR, Engadget and Business Insider. With that experience I learned a couple things, like: - The average attention span for how-to videos was under 2.5 minutes - Roughly 50/50 split of those who prefer learning via reading of watching a video - No one likes moving from where they're at to learn it somewhere else - I needed to be more sociable :) When graduating college I was trying to figure out what this YouTube page would become. I discovered learn startup and started doing a ton of interviews with people who watch tutorials, content creators and various businesses. I learned a lot of people really dislike how tutorials are presented today. They're either too long (i.e. scrubbing through long YouTube videos to find the part you're looking for), a book (i.e. reading pages of outdated forums and blog posts to piece together a solution) or outdated. On the flip side, I saw content creators needed to cobble together a ton of different platforms, tools and services just to create a single guide. None of which is dedicated to helping people make better tutorials. No wonder why tutorials are the way they are. That was the lightbulb moment -- fyiio was born! fyiio is a tutorial management platform for creating video and written tutorials tailored to how your customers prefer to learn. The platform has three main components, the: template, viewer and dashboard. The template bakes great instructional design principles into an easy-to-follow process: - upload a video (under 2.5 mins, although we don't enforce this yet) - add step-by-step instructions - sync each step to where it takes place in the video The viewer places video and written guides together in the same location, interacting with each other in real time. Clicking on a step jumps the video to that point in time. The step will expand with more detailed info, too. The dashboard is where you copy embed codes, direct links, manage content, invite additional users and more. We track how long each tutorial has been uploaded and will send reminders to update content periodically. If you need to make a change, any changes in the template will apply anywhere the content was shared -- meaning you won't have to update embed codes or direct links.
