Flutter has evolved a lot since we were first on Product Hunt.
The original vision was based entirely on live video, which people loved, but we discovered that requiring synchronicity doesn’t work. There just isn’t enough density to do live video and make Flutter location-based. The only reason Chat Roulette kind of worked is because it was global. We did some quick math, and even if everyone in San Francisco was on Flutter, it still wouldn’t be enough because people don’t keep any one app on their phone open long enough to make it work. Plus, you'd only meet the people who have a similar schedule to yours.
So, we switched from live video to disappearing recorded moments. This still forces the authenticity we loved in the first version of Flutter, but it is way more scalable. There’s still no sound.
What we found, is that once you match someone and start chatting, there's a natural synchronicity that happens. Eventually, you both end up in the chat at the same time, and when this happens, we give you a chance to meet face to face if either of you press the camera button.
We’ve also shifted away from saying Flutter is specifically for dating. People will still use it for dating, but making spontaneous connections with new people is valuable in many other contexts besides romance.
