Fifteen years ago, I went on a vision quest in the desert. I was meditating, alone, trying to get clarity about my life.

I had deprioritized things that actually mattered and was in the middle of a breakdown of my relationship as a result. I wasn’t overwhelmed by lack of effort; I was overwhelmed by lack of clarity.

What kept coming up during that time wasn’t some abstract insight, but a very practical realization: I was spending enormous mental energy just trying to decide what I needed to do next, and as a result, I was doing the wrong things — and avoiding to do the right ones.
