Flashcards with Friends was created by a group of students in Portland, Oregon. The goal was to create a fast, easy, and completely free platform for students to collaborate in an environment free of distractions, ads, and trackers. The platform remains run entirely by the founding students, for students. The experience is meant to feel like a traditional flashcard quiz you might play sitting across from each other at a table.
I wanted to make this after being annoyed by constant ads, lag, and pop-ups on major platforms like Quizlet. My friend and I also wanted a real-time two-player option, rather than just sharing decks. I built this to be super lightweight and fast. After I got the basics down: real-time two-player functionality and deck savingmaking, I started adding advanced features like deck sharing, user profiles, and the ability to import decks directly from Quizlet's library.
As a DevOps engineer, keeping this platform lightning-fast and cost-effective was a priority. I built the architecture using some of my favorite modern tools:
