Flameshot is a free, open-source, cross-platform tool for taking screenshots. It has many powerful features, and it is still free, very easy to use, and user-friendly.
What's great
I have used Flameshot on Linux Mint since day one. Region capture, arrows, blur, and copy-to-clipboard in one shortcut, that’s my whole screenshot workflow. Lightweight, open source, and not tied to a specific desktop. I recommend it to anyone on Linux(even Windows users :)))
What needs improvement
The critical issue is mixed-DPI setups: when the secondary monitor is 2K or higher, screenshots can come out wrong, shifted region, incorrect scale, or a broken capture. Recent updates improved this a bit, but it still isn’t as reliable as it was in the early days. Fixing HiDPI / mixed-DPI (for example 1080p primary + 2K/4K secondary), especially on Linux, would make Flameshot the default screenshot tool rather than “the one I recommend with a caveat.”
vs Alternatives
I still keep ksnip around as a fallback, it’s solid for annotation and saving captures. I also looked at Gnome Screenshot, Shutter, and Spectacle. Gnome Screenshot is too bare (no markup). Shutter is powerful but heavy and less maintained. Spectacle is fine on KDE but pulls in too much desktop baggage on Mint. I chose Flameshot as the daily driver because the shortcut-to-annotate-to-clipboard loop is faster. ksnip wins on some annotation extras; Flameshot wins on speed and staying out of the way. Closest Linux equivalent to ShareX for my workflow.
