This started as a bot that sent stock forecasts. Before selling it, I checked whether trading on those forecasts actually made money. It didn't: it lost to simply holding the market.
So I rebuilt everything around one question: what survives an honest backtest? 10 years of US stocks, delisted companies included, costs subtracted. Machine learning, stop-losses, indicator filters and clever exits all made the classic 12-1 momentum rule worse. What helped was execution: orders go out after 12:00 ET, when spreads are about four times narrower than at the open.
