A dictation app is the one app that runs all day, waiting for a single key. So we asked a simple question: why should it weigh hundreds of megabytes? The dictation apps we measured take 116 to 596 MB on disk. Featherweight Dictation takes 4.6 MB on a Mac and 2.3 MB on Windows, and uses 0% CPU while it waits.
How it works: hold a key (fn on a Mac, Right Alt on Windows), talk, and let go. About half a second later your words are typed where your cursor is, with the ums and do-overs gone, and laid out for the app: an email in Gmail, one line in WhatsApp, a list in Notion, a clean prompt in Cursor or Claude. Your audio and your words are never stored.
