Hey Product Hunt, I'm Aysan, the creator of Earning it.
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to read about my passion project turned iOS app.
Firstly, what is it?
Earning it is an app that locks the things you want behind effort. You name the thing, set what it costs you, and it stays locked until you've paid that off. Do a task a set number of times, stack a few tasks together, avoid a behaviour or vice for a period of time, or just wait it out.
A coffee machine once I've made 200 instant coffees instead of barista bought. A new 20kg kettlebell once I've done 10,000 squats with the four I already own. A weekend away to myself after two months of zero alcohol.
I’ve worked hard on the functionality so you can make a reward out of pretty much anything, and I’m always keen to see how friends and family are using it; and hopefully soon, you too.
The problem I aimed to solve
I, like many people, love to impulse buy. I see it, I add to cart, I pay extra for express shipping, it arrives I get the dopamine boost and two days later, it's in some random cupboard. Online shopping is engineered to be frictionless, which makes impulse buying easier than ever. My goal was to reintroduce the friction and stretch the time between seeing something and owning it.
The unexpected benefit
On a handful of occasions I've finished the tasks, earned the thing, and decided I no longer wanted it. It just sits in the app's earned list, the trophy case, and in some strange way knowing I'd earned the right to buy it was almost as satisfying as buying it.
The cost and the limits
Freemium Tier: Track two rewards only
Annual A$39.99
Lifetime A$199.99
No ads, no data selling.
The other limit is that it's iPhone only for now. I'm a solo developer, so bugs get fixed by me on weeknights after work and on weekends.
If you could do one thing for me, answer this. What's the first purchase you'd track towards and what would be your efforts to get there?
