Hey everyone 👋 Maker of Drop here. This started as a fun side project because I wanted to learn backend engineering by building a large file-processing system (queues, workers, concurrency, etc.). Initially I built everything the traditional way: upload file → server processes → download result. But before launching publicly, I realised two things: Server-heavy file processing gets expensive fast Most people (including me) don’t like uploading sensitive files to random tools While exploring alternatives, I discovered that modern browsers + Web Workers + WASM can handle most file processing locally. So I rebuilt everything with a browser-first, privacy-first approach. Now ~99% of processing happens directly on your device: PDF tools Image tools QR tools AI PDF summariser Google Drive import All in one workspace (no jumping between sites) Biggest challenges: Handling large files without crashing tabs Memory optimisation for low-end devices WASM debugging 😅 Keeping UI smooth during heavy processing This is still early (18 tools live, aiming 100+), so I’d genuinely love feedback from the PH community: • What tools should I add next? • Any UX improvements? • Performance issues on your device? • Would you use browser-first tools like this?
