Every rental site matches you on price and location. None of them ask whether you'll feel at home. DeshMate helps students and professionals in the US find rooms and roommates from their own language and cultural community: Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati, Arabic, Chinese, Korean and 30+ more. Rooms are posted by the tenants themselves, so you message them directly on WhatsApp. No brokers, no fees. Filter by city, community, food preference and lifestyle tags, and skip the WhatsApp group scroll.
Hey Product Hunt, I'm Krishna and I built DeshMate solo.
When I moved to the US for grad school, finding a room meant scrolling WhatsApp and Telegram groups at 2am hoping someone from my community had posted "room available, Telugu preferred." Every listing site matched on rent and distance. None of them cared whether my roommate would get my food, my festivals or my language.
DeshMate is that word-of-mouth network turned into one free notice board:
- Rooms and roommates posted by the tenants themselves, no brokers, no fees
- Search by city, community or language, food preference, budget and lifestyle tags (veg kitchen, night owl, festival person)
- 30+ communities built in: Telugu, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Arabic, Mandarin, Korean, Nepali, Spanish and more
- Message the person directly on WhatsApp or call them. We never sit in the middle
- Post a room in about 2 minutes with photos
It's live, free, and runs on a deliberately simple stack (vanilla JS, Supabase, Vercel) that I maintain myself.
I'd love feedback, especially from anyone who remembers what that first apartment search in a new country felt like. What would have made it easier for you?
Thanks for checking it out.
Krishna
