@vrypan can you explain a little further the connection to DropBox just to request an invite? It's unclear why that is needed and what it is that I'm giving you access to.
It seems that this would be a great way for me to store (offsite) a 2nd backup of my photos. I assume it's use cases like that for which you see primary users?
@cwhooten sure.
First of all, technically, what we request is to give Deepfreeze.io access to a folder under Dropbox, (Dropbox/Apps/deepfreeze.io/) We have no access to anything outside this folder. That's the "App Folder" permission type in Dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/develope...
The reason behind this is that at this phase, we want to have users who really make the most out of our service. We prefer to give 100 invitations to users who will move many GB to deepfreeze.io, instead of 1000 who will just upload a couple MB to test it. Connecting to dropbox as an app, makes it extremely easy for users to copy many GB from Dropbox to Deepfreeze.io, without for example being limited by their Internet connection speed. It also works the other way: it is much easier to extract a 50GB archive from Deepfreeze.io to Dropbox, instead of downloading it as a ZIP (which is always an option, of course).
In short: we want to be your "secondary storage in the cloud", so it's better to start with users who have a primary cloud storage :-)
That said, we intend to integrate with other services, like Google Drive, Box, etc., the reason we picked Dropbox first is their user base and the maturity of their APIs.
sounds cool. RE "We use Amazon Simple Storage Service and Amazon Glacier to store your files and every critical piece of information related to them", how do you differ to Amazon Glacier? And how can you offer it for free given the costs incurred with AWS?
Hi Jack. The free offer is only for a year, for people that are activated while we are in beta. It's fair, considering that we haven't developed all the functionality that will give users the full value of the service. And we consider this cost part of the promotional/testing cost.
