Shopping for a new car? Wait. A fully-loaded, reliable, nearly-new lease return may be your better option. Copilot’s new Compare tool shows you where they’re hiding - and reveals just how much you can save while ensuring you get the exact equipment you want.
Hi PH,
This is Pat, founder of CoPilot. We are so excited to introduce Compare to you today. But instead of giving you the product details (watch the video!) I wanted to tell you the story of why we built CoPilot in the first place.
Tech-savvy or not, most of us are not car experts, especially not car market analysts.
Yet cars are some of the largest purchases we’ll ever make.
And despite us spending all that money, the cards are stacked against the consumer – you’ll have to browse thousands of listings, make sense of tons of data, and research the same features named differently by marketing departments for each vehicle. And that's all before you even to get to the car dealership.
That’s why we built CoPilot and CoPilot Compare to make it easy for non-car experts to "buy smarter". We also provide alternative to the grind of car shopping: we curate only the best vehicles, compile expert analyses, and give you independent buy ratings. We actually started out building analytical software for the industry, but found that friends would bombard us with questions. So we pivoted and put those insights to good use and productized them – and it took off. We’ll soon help people with over $650m in annualized car purchases. BTW, we are not taking any money from dealers or manufacturers either.
Today, we are introducing Compare – because we think you should have no reason to buy a new car without considering what we call “nearly new” first. You can literally buy the same car with modest miles driven, the cutting edge features you want and a manufacturer warranty for tens of thousands less – it was just hard to navigate all of this on your own until now.
Go have a look, never hurts. And when the time comes, think of “nearly new” as something you consider.
Questions? Ask away!
Arndt here, also from CoPilot.
I wanted to share my personal 🚗 story and why I am so excited about introducing CoPilot Compare to you with @mbaker_4@patryanchicago and the team.
In 2017 (way before Compare existed) I found myself in a new role, having to commute 2 hours every day. I didn’t have a car. Some research later, I decided I really wanted a Volkswagen GTI.
I am a car geek, but the experience of shopping for a new car drove even me insane. I gave up after looking at dozens of new cars, frustrated with dealers and Truecar, intransparent pricing (“this incentive actually doesn’t apply to you”), and finance deals hiding costs in the fine print.
Out of that frustration, I stumbled across a “certified” 2016 model of the GTI, two trim levels up from what I was shopping for. Instead of the original price of ~$36k it was priced at ~$28k with (drumroll...) only 4700 miles. And I learned that 2016 and 2017 models are basically identical.
I drove that (nearly new) car off the lot for ~$26k a day later, financed. It was an early lease return and someone else had literally taken a $10,000 hit before me, plus I got all the extra bells and whistles… Leather seats, sports package, sunroof, Apple CarPlay, etc.. It came with 2 years of manufacturer bumper-to-bumper warranty, something I learned later is common for certified cars.
I got lucky back then, and I am excited that by introducing CoPilot Compare, we’ll get more people to consider the alternative I stumbled into by accident. Most people never even consider these slightly used (or “nearly new” as we call them) cars and we want to change that.
Whatever your reason is for wanting a new car: Don’t get one just yet. Maybe think of my story first and let Compare help you decide if there are better alternatives. Why not take a look at least?
And yes, I still have the GTI. Best car ever, love that thing. But ouch, tires are expensive.
Questions? Car questions? Bring it on.

This is great! I hate buying cars! My last two were exactly this: nearly-new. And it was a traumatic experience. I felt like the sellers/dealerships were armed with more information and, therefore, more negotiating power. CoPilot Compare is a great solution to give me the confidence I need to find and purchase my next nearly-new car. Can't wait to give it a try.
@crounse Thanks for the kind feedback! You and I both had that crappy dealer experience. That's why we are excited about Compare, because it helps everyone with that decision. Let us know how you like it!
FYI - little secret we are seeing in the data trends: Oct/Nov will see a flood of nearly-new cars from lease returns. Amazing time to buy if you can wait a month or two!

In pursuit of a newer car as my current car is almost a decade old, CoPilot was extremely helpful in helping me find newer cars of a similar make and model, as I've gotten accustomed to driving a Kia and would like to continue doing so.
I was expecting to be a bit intimidated by the step by step instructions because they have a tendency to be too detailed and confusing at times, but I found the instructions easy to navigate. I was pleased with the equipment preferences tab; it was very effective in helping me highlight the features I would want in my new car that I perhaps would have forgotten about if the options weren't there.
Even though I haven't made a decision on when exactly I will be purchasing a new car, CoPilot was able to provide me with the pricing and history of a variety of Kia Forte sedans. When my pursuit for my next car is more active, I will be utilizing CoPilot's easy to use compare tool!
@michfll So happy to hear that we are doing a great job in helping you navigate the process of finding your next Kia Forte. It's also great to hear that we've been able to streamline the process to make it easy to understand if you are getting a good deal or not. We can't wait to help you find the right one for you when you are ready :)

As a first time car buyer, CoPilot helped give me the information I needed to find a car that fit exactly what I was looking for - selected my mileage, budget, and must have features and CoPilot did the rest. Over a year later and I am still thrilled with the car I chose and the experience.
Beyond just finding me the right car it helped me learn more about what was a good deal and when the right time to buy would be. That helped a TON as I went into the dealership armed with knowledge and ready to negotiate. This led to real savings that I would never have known how to secure on my own.
I recommend CoPilot to coworkers, family and friends - really anyone who will listen. Give it a shot and you won’t be disappointed!
@alex_pinder Thanks for your comment Alex. Your point on right time to buy is critical to getting the best car at the best price. We are introducing Compare now because the nearly new market will be offering its best deals in a long time later this fall and in early winter.
I’ve been using CoPilot for about a month now and their data is incredible.
I have a BMW that’s just about a decade old and it’s on its last leg. It’s been all over the US from Chicago to Mississippi. It’s served me well, but not sure how long she has left!
It’s been really crazy valuable to see how much I can sell it for, what I can get for the value, if the dealer is giving me a deal or not, how motivated they are to sell... and a ton more.
Buying a car is so complicated and CoPilot has been great to help me simplify the process and get an A+ new to me car for a small fraction of the cost the dealer would extract out of me for a 2020 model. I don’t think I’ll ever buy any other way.
Oh, and it’s FREE (don’t ask me how they do it!)
@inventitorfixit I appreciate the comment and am glad that you had such a great experience Jordan. Let me address the question of how do we monetize while remaining your independent expert advisor. We don't take money from dealers or manufacturers and, unlike traditional online car shopping sites, dealers and manufacturers can never pay to be ranked higher in (or even included in) our recommendations and results.
So how will we make money? As the CoPilot community grows so does the buying power for other things related to owning a car. For example, we will be able to provide our members with great deals on auto insurance and the like, providing you with big savings while providing us a "win-win" way to make money.

I didn't expect to find one of my favorite car finding tools on Producthunt, but here it is! We have bought two of our cars based on data from CoPilot. We have a ton of confidence in the accuracy and use of their original application.
In addition to good data and results we appreciated the fact that we could enter the information necessary to get pricing and other history on vehicles and dealerships WITHOUT having our phones ringing off the hooks, text messages blowing up, and e-mail boxes overloading with dealership e-mails. We further appreciated the fact that we could go into the app and find what we were looking for without being pestered inside the app either. I don't know how the app is funded as there is no apparent link to dealerships, but it's great in current form and we can only hope that it can continue to exist as it has.
I took a look at this new tool this morning. While we're not really in the market for another car at this point, it's another great resource that has no strings attached to it. It does as the video and others who have commented have suggested. It's a really nice addition to what has been a great resource from their team. Great work and keep it up!
