CoAutoResearch turns GPT-6 Astra into a human-controlled research agent. A researcher provides a question, materials, constraints, and a compute budget. Astra then works through bounded research iterations: reading the project context, proposing experiments, modifying and running code, analyzing results, recording both positive and negative findings, and deciding what evidence suggests should happen next.
At every important point, the human remains in control. Researchers can review the direction, discuss findings, approve suggestions, pause the run, and make decisions that require scientific judgment. Reviewed evidence can then be turned into a traceable manuscript and paper draft.
The real task is not simply “answer a research question.” It is carrying out the iterative experimental work between a research idea and a reviewable scientific draft—without removing the researcher from the loop.

I built it around a tension I kept running into with AI research agents: autonomy is useful, but research shouldn’t become a black box that runs away from the researcher.
CoAutoResearch is an open-source research system designed around a simple principle: let the AI do the work, while keeping the human in control.
You can give it a research brief and let it run bounded experiments, record results, refine methods, and build toward a manuscript. But the researcher stays part of the loop: you can discuss findings while the research is running, review suggestions before they influence the work, pause when human judgment is needed, and inspect the evidence and decisions behind the final draft.
The goal isn’t fully autonomous science. It’s a research workflow where AI can move quickly and independently without taking control away from the researcher.
